2012 UEFA European Football
Championship - EURO 2012
As obviously the readers of "Politistiki Diplomatia"
know, the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship will be hosted by
Ukraine and Poland between 8 June and 1 July 2012. Commonly referred to
as EURO 2012, it will be the 14th European Championship for national
football teams sanctioned by UEFA. It is the first time that either
nation has hosted the tournament. This bid was chosen by UEFA's
Executive Committee in 2007. The sixteen finalists who will participate
in the final tournament are: Poland and Ukraine, as co hosts, defending
champion Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Russia,
Croatia, Greece, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, France, Czech Republic and
Ireland
The 2012 European Football Championship ' the exceptionally important
international sport event ' serves as proof of Ukraine's integrity with
Europe and will open Ukraine to the world and the European community in
a new way.
The success of EURO 2012 is based on a Ukrainian-Polish partnership. The
two friendly neighboring countries have been working together for more
than 4 years based on the "Two Countries ' One Tournament" formula. The
competition slogan, Creating History Together (Ukrainian: Творимо
історію разом / Tvorymo istoriyu razom), reflects the fact that Poland
and Ukraine were united in the past as one country and now represent
ambitions of two eastern nations to perform the best tournament in the
history of European Championship.
Ukraine is practically ready for the start of EURO 2012. Four stadiums
and four new international airports with three new runways, dozens of
hotels, as well as the infrastructure, were built or reconstructed in
Ukraine in compliance with UEFA requirements.
It is my pleasure to stress that the four EURO 2012 arenas in Ukraine
have implemented the highest security, and have fully satisfied UEFA
requirements in terms of the number of seats and arena infrastructure
adjustments for persons with physical handicaps and are 100% ready to
hold EURO 2012 matches. The Ukraine's arenas of EURO 2012 for the
Championship are some of the most modern in all of Europe. These are:
the Kyiv based National Sports Complex "Olympic" (capacity for EURO
2012: 60,000 seats); the Lviv based stadium "Arena Lviv" (33,400 seats),
the Donetsk based stadium "Donbass Arena" (50,000 seats), the Kharkiv
based stadium "Metalist" (30,000 seats).
For the convenience of fans going to visit Ukraine for EURO 2012, on the
eve of and during the tournament, the Ukrainian national currency, the
hryvnia, will be on sale in exchange offices at major European airports.
Furthermore, to accommodate foreign fans, all procedures at Ukrainian
border crossings will be simplified for the period of Euro 2012.
Although it is anticipated that aviation to be the preferred means of
transportation, everything is being done in Ukraine to improve
communication in and among EURO cities. By Euro 2012 Ukraine will launch
high-speed trains between host cities to provide EURO 2012 guests and
fans with comfort during their travels.
One of the main tasks of EURO 2012 is to encourage guests of the
tournament to come back to Ukraine even after the games are over. This
is not just an issue of the country's image. EURO 2012 will be the first
time that many fans will have been acquainted with Ukraine. The State
Tourism and Resorts Agency of Ukraine estimates approximately one
million people to visit Ukraine during EURO 2012. We also expect growth
of international tourist flow to Ukraine of some 30-40 % in 2012
compared to 2011, which means approximately two million tourists.
I am solely convinced that the organization of this tournament will
become a catalyst for the further progress of Ukraine's tourism sphere
and infrastructure, as well as the development of football in all of its
aspects. This event will definitely provide great opportunity for all
fans and tourists around the world to visit our wonderful country, and I
hope all visitors will be fully satisfied and receive positive
impressions from both the Football Championship and the beauty that the
Ukrainian land has to offer.
I would like to emphasize one's again that Ukraine has made a lot for
successful organization of Euro-2012 and I believe that this football
holiday will increase a number of real friends of our country.
