Ambassador of Romania, Mr. George Ciamba

 

 

 

On July 2005 Mr. George Ciamba was designated as Romania's Ambassador to Greece. On September 30, 2005 he presented his credentials to the President of the Hellenic Republic.

Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Ciamba held the position of Secretary of State (Deputy Minister) for Multilateral or Global Affairs of the MFA since July 16 2003. In this capacity he led the Romanian delegations attending ministerial meetings of the EU (IGC), NATO, Council of Europe, UN and other organizations.

Mr. Ciamba was Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Turkey (1999-2003) and the Permanent Representative of Romania to the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (2001-2003).

After graduation in 1990 he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania as an attache and went through all diplomatic ranks, having held the diplomatic rank of Ambassador since 2004. Between 1990 and 1999 he held various positions in the Ministry: desk officer for United States, desk officer for IAEA, Chief of the Chancellery of the MFA, Deputy Director and Director, Department for North America (1996-1997). During his tenure as Director of the North America Department he was in charge of the Romania-USA Strategic Partnership Governmental Task Force and a member of the Romania-USA Action Committee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a leading think-tank based in Washington, structures designed for building upon Romania's comparative advantages (strategic, political and economical) in the bilateral relations with the US.

In 1999 he was awarded the Romanian Ambassador of the Year by the Romanian Daily Nine O'Clock.

In 2000 he received the award "The National Merit Order in Grade of Commander".

Mr. Ciamba was born in February 1966 in Bucharest. He graduated the Faculty of Electronics Engineering (1989), has an MA in International Relations from University of Bucharest and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he attended the Stanford University's Program on International Relations and Economics (1992) and was a participant in the International Visitor Program on Foreign Policy of the United States Information Agency (1997).

Daniel Bennett Smith was sworn in as United States Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic on September 7, 2010.

A career officer in the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor, Ambassador Smith served most recently as Executive Secretary of the State Department. He has held other senior positions in the Department, including Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs and Deputy Executive Secretary. His overseas service includes tours in Bern, Istanbul, Ottawa and Stockholm. He also taught Political Science at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Ambassador Smith is a recipient of the Arnold L. Raphel Memorial Award, the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award, a Presidential Meritorious Service Award, and several Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards.

Ambassador Smith received his Ph.D. and M.A. from Stanford University and his B.A. from the University of Colorado in Boulder. His foreign languages are German, Turkish and Swedish. He is married and has three sons.
