Let's enjoy EURO 2012 together
In
a week from now, the National Stadium in Warsaw will resound to the
first whistle of the first match of EURO 2012, a very important for both
of our Nations.
The teams will compete for the title of European Champion in 31 matches
which will be held on eight stadiums, four in Poland - in Gdansk, Poznan,
Warsaw, Wroclaw - and four in Ukraine - in Donetsk, Lvov, Kharkov and
Kiev.
To carry out the UEFA EURO 2012 European Football Championship, a
state-of-the-art sports infrastructure is necessary. In accordance with
UEFA guidelines, stadiums where football games will take place within
Euro 2012 should fulfil determined, highest quality requirements inter
alia in the scope of fan service or safety and security. When in April
2007, Poland was awarded the organisation of Euro 2012, relevant
infrastructure in this scope in our country was missing. Therefore,
decision was made to build completely new or reconstruct existing
stadiums.
Expanded City Stadium in Poznan was commissioned to use on September 20,
2010. The other 3 stadiums are completely new constructions. All four
are the most modern facilities of such type in Europe.
None of the stadiums is just a facility to be used for the purposes of
football competition only and none of them is intended to serve solely
the purpose of Euro 2012. The facilities were designed as the so-called
multi-purpose arenas, adapted for organization of events of various
kinds - not only sports events, but also cultural, entertainment,
business or social ones such as e.g. concerts, business events, fairs,
and even weddings. Thanks to the above, these facilities will not be
used just a dozen or so times a year only for the purposes of football
games, but they will be teeming with life throughout a great part of the
year. Therefore it will make it possible not only to effectively use the
stadiums after Euro 2012, but it will also ensure generating financial
profits, enabling thereby covering the costs of their maintenance.
As the Prime Minister of Poland Mr. Donald Tusk underlines, Poland has
made tremendous progress in her development. Two decades ago, we were a
poor post-communist country on Europe's eastern frontier. Today we are
the country that has averted recession during last turmoil and become
the biggest construction site in the European Union. We invite you to
see for yourselves the scale of change which our country has undergone.
And there are many more reasons to visit Poland. Apart from our
legendary Polish hospitality, you can discover many attractions which
are still off the beaten tourist track: the Great Masurian Lake
District; the Bialowieża Primeval Forest, unique in the EU; Wroclaw with
its bridges and canals; vibrant and modern Warsaw; the 1000 year old
Cathedral Island and the Renaissance City Hall in Poznan; and Gdansk - a
pearl of Hanseatic architecture. These are just a few examples of many
places worth seeing.
