Denmark's EU presidency -
a cultured approach
Denmark
has the honour of presiding over the rotating Presidency of the European
Union in the first half of 2012. At a challenging time for Europe, the
EU Presidency entails great political responsibility. However, in
addition to political leadership, the EU Presidency also provides an
opportunity for a small country to share our innovative ideas and proud
cultural heritage with the rest of Europe, and, indeed, the rest of the
world. During the Danish EU Presidency, the Royal Danish Embassy in
Greece will offer the best of what Denmark has to offer in terms of our
cultural past, present and future.
Beginning with the past, the vivid and inspiring stories of Hans
Christian Andersen have been part of upbringing for many children.
Equally, the contribution to European literature and philosophy by one
of the fathers of existentialism, Soren Kierkegaard, is another prime
example of Danish cultural heritage. In classical music, composer Carl
Nielsen has left us works that remain more popular today than ever.
The Danish Embassy in Greece has the honour of co-hosting a concert on 1
June 2012 with the brilliant works of Carl Nielsen performed by the
Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra. The Danish EU Presidency is also
about showing what is happening today at the Danish art scene. Denmark's
perhaps most famous painter and sculptor, Per Kirkeby, has exhibited a
number of his works at the Byzantine Museum in Athens from 1 February to
24 March. Kirkeby's paintings are greatly inspired by Byzantine art and
the exhibition has proved a great success with audience and critics
alike as Kirkeby's unique artwork builds a bridge between Denmark and
Greece.
At the music scene, one of the best recorder performers in the world,
Michala Petri, will display her unique talents at a concert on 29 May in
the Onassis Cultural Centre. Danish filmmaking is also gaining a lot of
ground internationally, and in light of the Danish EU presidency, the
2012 Thessaloniki Documentary Festival featured 12 Danish Docs. While it
is essential that we appreciate the past and present, it is also vital
that we concern ourselves with our future.
If we do not take good care of our planet, there will be fewer
opportunities for coming generations to enjoy life and culture. Thus
green and environmentally sustainable solutions are pursued as Denmark
aims to make this a top priority on the European and global agenda. The
EU presidency provides a platform to present positive Danish experiences
with sustainable energy ' notably wind power - and green urban
environments, such as the world's bicycle capital of Copenhagen. Denmark
as a State of Green wants to use its leading position in terms of green
technology to inspire other major cities to include environmental and
civic concern into urban planning.
For this reason, the Royal Danish Embassy in Greece has invited the
global pioneer on sustainable architecture, Mr. Jan Gehl, founder of
Gehl Architects, to present his thoughts on the possibilities of
'greening' the city of Athens. This will take place at the Benaki Museum
on 25 April.
As Denmark's Ambassador to Greece, I am grateful for the opportunity to
present input and ideas from my home country to an interested Greek
public. In this way, the Danish EU presidency seeks not only to enforce
our joint European project through political leadership but also by
exploring and expanding our common cultural past, present and future.
